What is a padmount transformer?
A padmount transformer is a ground-level distribution transformer enclosed in a locked, tamper-resistant steel cabinet, mounted on a concrete pad. It serves underground electrical distribution — meaning the primary cables come in from below, not from overhead lines.
Padmount units are the modern standard for:
- Residential subdivisions
- Commercial buildings, shopping centers, and office parks
- Industrial sites and manufacturing plants
- Hospitals, schools, and data centers
- Anywhere overhead lines are aesthetically or operationally undesirable
What is a polemount transformer?
A polemount transformer is mounted to a utility pole (or a series of poles for three-phase banks) and serves overhead electrical distribution lines. The primary cables come in from the overhead network, the transformer steps the voltage down, and the secondary cables drop down to the customer service.
Polemount units are still the standard for:
- Rural electrification
- Single-family residential service in areas without underground utilities
- Agricultural operations
- Small commercial along roadside corridors
- Utility distribution in regions where overhead is the established infrastructure

Cost: the surprising answer
A polemount transformer is almost always cheaper to install — no concrete pad, no underground vault, less conduit. But the total cost of ownership tips toward padmount in most modern projects:
- Polemounts are more vulnerable to hurricanes, tropical storms, ice, and falling trees
- Polemounts require bucket trucks for any maintenance call
- Padmount real estate disappears underground after install — better for property value
- Insurance and outage costs favor padmount in storm-prone regions like Florida and the Gulf Coast
Which one should you order?
It depends almost entirely on the existing distribution system at the site:
- If the utility serves the site overhead → polemount
- If the utility serves the site underground → padmount
- If you're building new → padmount, almost always. Modern building codes, HOAs, commercial developers, and storm-resilient grid initiatives all push underground.
